Journalist Ben Chu examines in his book myths created by the West about China and Chinese. Chu concludes that in many occasions Western portrayals of China reflect more domestic politics of those countries. E.g. economic success of China can be argument for a) for stronger statist involvement for the left-wingers, b) more liberal, laissez-faire capitalism for the right-wingers or industrialists. Chu singles out seven “myths” and takes them apart. The case of education is interesting and how there are fears about China outpacing the West, but actually China’s educational system is facing challenges and its innovativeness is lacking behind.
