Алые Паруса (Scarlet sails) in St.Petersburg

St.Petersburg celebrates the White nights at the end of June as the sun barely sets for an hour or so. Less known spectacle for outsiders is Scarlet sails or Алые Паруса. Scarlet sails was a romantic novel by Alexander Grin in 1923 which was popularised by a movie in 1961. After the II World War the Scarlet sails story transformed into a popular celebration which coincided with end of school year.

In 2013 the Scarlet sails was three-fold event: pop concert at the Palace Square (full of students), fireworks and passage by a sailboat with red sails by Neva river.
